Context

Built because nothing fit.

I play a lot of games that never get a Vietnamese release, and I watch a lot of videos in English. Nothing on the market fit what I needed: dialogue translated the moment it appears in any game, read aloud in a voice that sounds like a person, and a Vietnamese voice-over for videos without a daily cap. The dubbing extension I used allowed five free videos a day.

So I built my own, and treated it as a test. Can one product designer take a product from a personal problem to a public release, alone, and keep improving it from what people say? OverHub is the name for the family that came out of it.

Three products

One engine, three places where people meet foreign content.

OverSub reads game dialogue from the screen, translates it and reads it aloud. It is public on GitHub at version 1.1.86, and a Windows version for handheld PCs is in development.

OverDub turns YouTube captions into a voice-over in Safari and Chrome. OverTub brings the same voice-over to iPhone and iPad. Both are in development.

OverSub on the Mac, OverDub on YouTube in Chrome, and OverTub on iPhone.

Private case

The rest of this case covers my role, the decisions behind each product, how I ship them and what I learned. OverDub and OverTub are still in development, so the full story is shared privately.
